The Curves of Demetria Obilor (And Any Full-Figured Woman) Absolutely Belong in Front of the Camera
Demetria Obilor is a full-figured woman who also happens to be a newly hired traffic news reporter on WFAA, Channel 8 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
This week, Obilor fully embraced her role in her first day in front of the camera by showing up with a youthful style after having moved from a station in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Obilor was promptly met with criticism on social media by former Channel 8 viewer, Jan Shedd who says she is now boycotting the news show because of Obilor’s attire. Here’s her facebook post:
Shedd’s post has since been taken down, but the damage has been done in the form of yet another young, full-figured woman being scrutinized for doing the same thing women have always done: dressing fashionably.
Even Mary Tyler Moore Showed a lil’ leg in the 70’s.
Let’s be honest, not so many years ago Obilor may not have been considered for her job at all because, to many, body shaming was still very much a “thing.” Remember this same debate about #TeacherBae a little over a year ago?
Today, women of all shapes, sizes, and aesthetics can be found in front of the camera and in many other professions as the definition of beauty broadens to become all-inclusive. The breakthrough has been painstaking work, but the evening news is no longer singularly escorted in by skinny Becky with the good hair. . . And exactly what does beauty, body size, and shape even have to do with reporting the news anyway?
These days, people just want good, fact-based information from a reliable source.
That said, nobody is criticizing White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders for being whatever she is in front of the national press everyday.
So, what’s really Jen Shedd’s problem?
